JULY 2008

7/24 2 BoC PROGRAMS IN ATLANTA  Robert Simmons reports that The Beads of Courage program at the Emory campus location for Children’s Health Care of Atlanta is up and running as of June 9, 2008.  It has been very well received and is a great success.  The program at Scottish Rite will begin to give beads to the kids on October 6.
7/24 JULY MEETING PHOTOS  Shannon Brickey and Don Meadows made an outstanding Power Point presentation about photographing beads - interesting, useful, clear - the Web Mama can't rave enough about it. We posted some photographs of the projected Power Point slides in our Scrapbook but obviously the Web Mama could use a special lecture on photographing projected images - it is very difficult to do well and we didn't.  Nevertheless, we have posted them  so that those of you who couldn't attend attend the meeting will have some idea of the pointers that Shannon gave us.  Maybe we can persuade Shannon and Don to email us a few of their original images and/or the outline so that we can post it in our Tips and Techniques section.  But for now you can see photos from the July Meeting and of the Bead Photography presentation in the SF Scrapbook.
7/24 SHADOWS UNLIMITED     Did you know that Don Meadows and Shannon Brickey have a website that features both of their work.  Shannon is a a graphic artist, web designer, and photographer.  Don makes beads, marbles, goblets, figures and fused plates.  Click here to see  Shadows Unlimited.
7/24 WELCOME TO OUR MEETING  Maureen Lovell is our official SF Greeter and she brings Welcoming to a whole new level.   Not only has she organized name badges so we can find them easily but she also makes sure to collect each and every badge before the meeting ends   The Web Mama is particularly grateful because she can never find her badge - usually because she always forgets to turn it back in.  If this is your first meeting, make sure to tell Maureen and she will introduce you to other members. If you would like to see Maureen's photo, click here.
7/20 USING PMC with GLASS LOTTERY  Gerry White will be teaching two different 1-day PMC (Precious Metal Clay) classes at Beads by Design on Sat/Sun Sept 13-14 especially designed for glass beadmakers.  Gerry is a certified PMC instructor as well as a professional gold and silver artisan who sponsors Southern Flames at her Beads by Design shop.  Click here for more information about each of the classes and to see the lottery form.  The lottery will be held at the SF Board meeting on August 4 so checks and registration forms are due by mail to Martha Fuerst by August 2nd.
7/20  BRIGHTWELL GLASS STUDIO Mary Brigtwell, a glass artist for more than 10 years,  is opening a new glass studio in Woodstock.  She will be offering workshops in fusing, open studio for both fusing and beadmaking, tools and bullseye glass.   She also has COLD WORKING equipment available including a vertical wet belt sander, professional tile saw, 8" and18" diamond flat grinders, diamond drill press and sandblasting machine. Two of the classes are "Getting to Know Glass Beadmaking".  These are 1 session classes for people who want to see if they would like to pursue beadmaking.  The other classes are 8-9 sessions each for either beginner or intermediate beadmakers.  These classes are unbelievably reasonable in price and you couldn't find a better teacher than Margo.  Click here for details and to register.
7/20  GLASSHAVEN WIKIPEDIA  Andrea Winkler and Julia Benson Slaughter are starting a Wikipedia Knowledge base for lampworking and other hot glass techniques.  Click here to read more about it and/or to contribute.  (SF members can bypass the rules for contributing if they email Andrea or Julia.)

7/12 ETSY, ETSY One of the first SF beadmakers to start selling their beads on ETSY was Marcy Lamberson.  Since then this online store which sells hand made items has really taken off and many beadmakers are finding it an excellent venue for their work.  If you have never stopped in at Marcy's store. STUDIO MARCY, check it out.  Her beads are whimsical, creative and fun.  Since they sell quickly there are always new ones to look at.  We guarantee you will not leave STUDIO MARCY with at least one giggle and perhaps one bead!  Marcy will be presenting to the entire Gathering in Oakland this summer so if you want a "Marcy creation, its best to do it before the larger bead world sees her work!
7/12 BEAD GALLERY Suzanne Patterson just sent us a bead for the bead gallery and it is a beautiful bead and an excellent photo - if you have ever tried to photograph dichro, you will know how difficult it is to capture.  Click here to see it.

6/1 NEW BOOKS  A couple of new glass bead books have just been published which are excellent.

The first is by Larry Scott  "Masters: Glass Beads: Major Works by Leading Artists". This book is a visual delight.  While you may or may not agree with all of Larry's choices, what is wonderful about the book is that several pages are devoted to each artist's work with selections spanning several years of their beadmaking careers so that you really get to see what they do and how their work has evolved.

The second Book is "Glass Bead Workshop: Building Skills, Exploring Techniques, Finding Inspiration" by Jerry Warhaftig.  Unlike many glass bead making books, this one explores techniques and projects for the intermediate and advanced bead maker such as Sandblasting and Blown Hollows, Sculptured Flowers, Grinding/Window beads and more.

The Web Mama was able to get both books from Amazon.com with free standard shipping for 32.94 which is a significant discount from their list price.

"During July, all ISGB members are encouraged to "plant" some of your own handmade beads (annealed and cleaned, of course) in your area as a way to invite more of the public into our wonderful world of beadmaking. Our project will culminate in beads being planted all around the Oakland/San Francisco area with many including a free pass to the Gathering Bead Bazaar. So, it's time to get ready for ISGB's first annual RELEASE A BEAD Project!" Click here for more info from the ISGB Release a Bead Committee. Sounds like fun!!
5/14 JEWELRY PHOTO TECHNIQUES  Dana Lunde mentioned at the last Southern Flames meeting that she would pass along a link on the subject of photographing jewelry that she thought would be helpful to SF members. Dana writes "This website also offers for sale necessary tools such as 'light-tents' and true daylight balanced light bulbs, lighting fixtures and accessories to assist in the process of photographing jewelry or in this case beads. I personally have not purchased anything from the Table Top Studio, so I cannot vouch for their reputation as being a legitimate web vendor but they appear to be safe, offering a physical address, phone number and secure transactions." We will also add this to the Tips and Techniques page.

12/15 DREW FRITT'S BOOK  We are putting together a group buy for Drew Fritts book "Making Marbles".  It has been recommended by many of our members even for lampworkers who never make marbles because so much of the information about color mixing and other subjects is transferable to beads.  If you would like to be included in this group order, send a check made out to Southern Flames for $22.75 to Kim Runge by January 15 or bring the check to the next meeting.  If you are mailing the check, send it to Southern Flames, c/o Kim Runge, 311 Peachtree Hills Avenue, Box 11A, Atlanta, GA  30305.
