June 2007 MEETING NOTES from Karen Barefield, Secretary
Diane opened the meeting with a big thanks to Gerry and Stephanie for hosting the June meeting. There were 2 new members present, Maureen Lovell and Nancy Stone, and Diane and the group welcomed them to Southern Flames.
Diane reminded the group that if any members needed help with bead related questions or problems that they should ask. Southern Flame members have significant experience, and are very open about helping other members with bead related techniques and questions.
Diane announced the return of the torches and let everyone know how great a company Nortel is as they clean our torches at no charge, because they are teaching torches
The Bead Release has an Eye Candy section that showcases ISGB members beads. Any interested members need to send their pictures to Terry Hale with the dates that the information is due. Terry’s email is: terry@halefireglass.com

The lottery for the Dustin Tabor class will be next month’s meeting. An announcement will be sent to members this week. Diane had several copies of Dustin’s class information, bio, and lottery form.
The lottery for the Heather Trimlett class will be in August. The Thursday and Friday class will focus on buttons, and the Sat. and Sun. class on vessels.
There was information present about the next Hot Time in the Mountains in Ashville, NC from Margorie Langston. There will be 2 sessions, 9/27-30, and 10/4-7. Contact Margorie Langston or Diane Kovach for more information if you are interested.
Brad Pearson will be having a class in Chattanooga, TN on 11/8-9. Contact Margorie Langston or Diane Kovach for more information.

Kim Runge was unable to attend so there was no treasurer’s report.
Jim Moore Tools donated Spiral Tongs to the Resource Cabinet for members to borrow. Check out his website for new tools. www.toolsforglass.com
Karen Barefield reported that new rules were being developed for the resource cabinet, and would be reported on next month. She reported that the presses were all back in the cabinet, and would be available for members to check items out tonight. There will be no access to the cabinet for checking out items except at meetings, and then only with the librarian present.

Challenge for the June meeting was: Life is a Beach. June Manis won a
$25 gift cert. to Beads By Design as the bead challenge winner.
Former SF board Thank-you presentations of beads were given to Bonnie Anderson, Carl Andrews, and Marcy Lamberson for their service to Southern Flames this past year. Stacia Schmidt was unable to attend.
Marcy Lamberson did a delightful demo of a shell bead for the members.
The group then got together and each member shared several of their beads. Each person told what they used to make the beads, the type of glass, and a little about each bead. There was lots of eye candy present, and each member had something special to share with the group.

SILENT AUCTION MEETING NOTES

The meeting was called to order by Alice St. Germain, and new board members were introduced, Diane Kovach, Co-President, Karen Barefield, Secretary, and Linda Edmunds, Webmaster. After announcements the Silent Auction began.
There were wonderful Cinco De Mayo refreshments to keep bidders strength up. Gerry and Stephanie White had provided marvelous ingredients for tacos, burritos, and salad, with fruit for dessert and soft drink accompaniment. A big thank you to Gerry and Stephanie of Beads by Design, for organizing and making the wonderful food.
There were 5 tables of wonderful supplies, tools, and beads to bid on. There was hot and heavy, but polite, bidding on items on each table until Kim Runge called time. Summary: The evening began with passing out election ballots and giving the meeting announcements. Tom Holland gave a slide show presentation on the history of the beads. It was very interesting. Sage showed how she makes her mask bead. Everyone celebrated Tom's birthday month with cake, balloons and munchies.

Gathering Postcards beads can be picked up at the May meeting or given to the silent auction.

The May 5 meeting will be our Silent Auction. This should be wonderful fun. Please consider donating beads, jewelry, tools, glass, etc. We already have many wonderful donations and folks will be receiving an email listing some of the items. Looking forward to seeing everyone there

We had a lovely meeting with many announcements and a great demo by Larry Scott. The sleet kindly waited until after most folks had left and headed home
ANNOUNCEMENTS
1. As always, Thanks to Gerry and Stephanie for their hospitality and allowing use of their store, Beads by Design.
2. With regret the Board accepted the resignation of Troy Adkins, our Event Coordinator Director. He is relocating to Washington D.C. for an exciting job opportunity. We thank him for his work and will miss his enthusiasm for our shared hobby. He assures us that he plans to return to Atlanta in the future so will be back.
3. Election time is coming soon. Yes, the time to select a new Southern Flames board! Don't you feel the need to share your ideas? Do you know the perfect person for a certain position? Start thinking about running or at least who you would like to see representing your interests in our organization.
4. Southern Flames member, Cristie Prince, can be found in the December/January issue of Beadwork Magazine with instructions to make her lovely STAR OF INDIA reversible bracelet.
5. Glass Alchemy donated some wonderful goodie bags for us to use as prizes and also some literature for those interested. A thank you note was passed at the meeting to sign. Thank you to Marcy for being the contact person.
6. Metamorphosis- " Celebrating our
15 years, the ISGB announces the glass bead jewelry exhibit "Metamorphosis:
The Life Cycle of a Glass Bead". This exhibit will highlight the life cycle
of a glass bead through the display of a single glass bead and its
incorporation into a complete piece of jewelry. Artists are encouraged to
interpret the metamorphosis theme in their submissions." For more

7. Requests for Volunteers: We have several projects in the works and would welcome persons interested in participating in an organizational capacity.
o Gathering table – If anyone is interested in organizing a Southern Flames table at the bazaar for the Gathering this summer, please speak with or email Carl or Alice. ( southern.flames@gmail.com)
o The Silent Auction is tentatively scheduled for May. We are hoping to make this Silent Auction a real "event." We're contacting businesses, beadmakers and asking our members for donations. If you are interested in sitting on a committee for this event, please speak with or email Carl or Alice. (southern.flames@gmail.com)
o We trying to think of ways to make our organization more welcoming and friendly for the newcomer. If you have any ideas or are interested in working on a committee with this focus, please speak with or email Carl or Alice. ( southern.flames@gmail.com)
8. Photos request- If you have taken any pictures at classes, demos, meetings, etc, please send them to Adele. We would like them for possible use in a postcard and/or for group history. Please email them to Adele at adele@bellsouth.net
9. Southern Flames Postcard – Do you want to be published? Bonnie and Renee have kindly agreed to head up the postcard this year. It is open to all Southern Flames members of all levels of experience. Please bring your bead to the next meeting on February 10 or mail it to Bonnie by February 24th. As we had just enough room last year to include all of the submissions on the postcard, we may have to limit it to first-come, first-served. Another reason to get your bead in early! 10. Beads of Courage – Last November we
had a Beads of Courage bead making party and sent approximately 100 beads
and heart beads. Robert Simmons announced that we had received a very nice
thank you letter from Beads of Courage and several pounds of glass to use
for future beads. If you are planning to make beads for this worthy
charity, the glass can be found in the Southern Flames cabinet at Beads by
Designs. We have a box in our resource cabinet for bead donations to be
sent to Beads of Courage

11. Non-profit Status – Kim Runge, Treasurer Director, announced that our long awaited application for official non-profit status has been approved by the IRS.
12. Art-O-Mat - Carl, one of our Co-President Directors, shared an alternative marketing opportunity as well as a way to sell orphan beads. For more information consult their website at www.artomat.org.
13. Around Town – The Atlanta Botanical Gardens is hosting an exhibit titled "Orchid Daze with Frabel: Glass Impressions." The exhibit "integrates the Atlanta Botanical Garden's world-renowned orchid collection with the spectacularly detailed sculptures of internationally acclaimed artist and Atlanta resident Hans Godo Fräbel."
14. Challenge winner – Alayne Perry was the challenge winner for the topic "show us what you know." Her prize was a gift bag from Glass Alchemy and some accompanying literature.
