Fergie's Reactive Glass Tricks:

Working Successfully with Reactive Glasses

Thursday & Friday April 23-24

Saturday & Sunday April 25-26, 2009

This class evolved from a demonstration on reactive (silvered) glasses presented by Julie Ferguson ("Fergie") at Hot Time in the Mountains in Asheville, NC in 2008.  She spent many months experimenting with reactive glass and ultimately prepared a fabulous demo as well as a lengthy handout to convey her working methods and personal observations harvested from her in-depth study.

The 2-day class will be held on Thursday/Friday April 23-24 and Saturday/Sunday, April 25-26, 2009.  The cost of the class will be $220 for Southern Flames Members and $245 for non members.  The class will require some specific brands and colors of glass.  Given the high cost of this glass, order minimums, and shipping costs, Southern Flames will pre-purchase the necessary reactive glass for use in the class in order to reduce costs for each student.  Therefore, included in the class fee will be approximately ¼ lb. of reactive glass (Double Helix and Precision/R4), as well as some Precision clear and Vetrofond odd lot colors, frit, shards, and other materials, as well as the updated version of Julie's extensive Hot Time booklet.

The class will begin with an overview of Julie's approach to experimenting with this pricey (but WONDERFUL) glass.  Julie will discuss the different types of reactive glasses (striking, reducing [light vs. dark]), show examples of various colors, and demonstrate the methods she uses for making and documenting test sample beads.  Students will then have the opportunity to work at making the various test beads for themselves.

More demos will follow and students will have an opportunity after each demo to make the bead as demonstrated, as well as to experiment with the same bead using other reactive colors.  There will be tips and suggestions, time for inspiration, experimenting, and brainstorming.

After the students have become familiar with the ins and outs of reactive glasses, the second half of the class will focus on more complex designs adding additional elements such as hanabi cane, metals, layering, etc.

If time permits, students will experiment with the knowledge they've gained by applying it to the styles of beads which they are personally comfortable with making, learning how to replace "ingredients" in their own favorite bead styles with this versatile glass.

Experience Level:

Intermediate.  Students should have completed some form of basic glass beadmaking instruction, either self–taught or otherwise.

As indicated, reactive glass will be included in the class fee, but students will be asked to bring their own Morretti/Effetre glass to be used in the class, and standard tools.  Students are also encouraged to bring any reactive glasses they may already own and wish to experiment with.  A specific materials/supply list will be sent to students after the lottery.

Placement of students in the classes will be by lottery, open only to Southern Flames members in good standing, as detailed below.

Lottery Details:

The lottery for class placement will be held at the Southern Flames meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 21. 2009, at Beads by Design. Prior to the lottery, each interested member must complete a Lottery Form and provide a check for $220.00 made out to Southern Flames.

You may complete the Lottery Form and bring it, along with your check, to the occasion of the lottery drawing (see date and location above -- additional lottery forms will be available at that time).

If you would like to be included in the lottery, but will not be able to attend the occasion of the lottery drawing, you may mail your completed Lottery Form along with a check payable to Southern Flames in the amount of $220.00 to the Southern Flames Treasurer, Martha Fuerst, at the address below:

Martha Fuerst
2679 Mercedes Drive NE
Atlanta, Georgia 30345-3974

Your check must be received by Martha no later than Friday, February 20, 2009.  Martha will email you a confirmation when she has received your check and form, and you will be entered into the lottery drawing.  If you do not receive a confirmation within a reasonable time, please contact Martha prior to the lottery to confirm whether or not your check and lottery form have been received.  Martha's email address is

Eight spaces will be available for this class.  Once all eight spaces are filled, names will continue to be drawn for waitlist positions.  Please note on your Lottery Form if you wish to be placed on waitlist status.  Checks for waitlist participants will not be deposited unless a class position opens for that person.  In the past, we have often had students withdraw due to various emergencies, and have actually been able to place the last person on the waitlist in the class, so there is a possibility that slots may become available to those on the waitlist.

Checks received from lottery participants who do not win class seats in the lottery will be destroyed unless the member indicates he or she would like to be on the waitlist.  In that event, checks will be held but not deposited unless a class position becomes available.

If at any time a waitlist participant would like to be removed from the waitlist, he or she may notify the Treasurer, and she will return that person's check and remove him/her from the waitlist.

Once you have been placed in a class, the class fee is non-refundable.  However, if you are ultimately unable to attend the class, you should notify the Treasurer and/or the Event Coordinator, and your space will be offered to those on any waitlist.  You will be refunded your money only if someone takes over and pays for your class space.  The process of filling vacated class spaces must go through the Treasurer/Event Coordinator and the waitlist process. You may not directly sell or give your space to another individual unless all waitlisted persons have declined to take over the space.

At the beginning of the class you will be asked to complete a liability waiver; only those who complete and sign the waiver may attend the class.  You will not be eligible for a refund of the class fee if you refuse to sign the waiver.  In addition, Southern Flames reserves the right to place class photos, which may include pictures of you and/or your class work, on its website.

If the class is not full after the lottery...

If any class seats are open after completion of the lottery process, an email will be sent to Southern Flames members announcing an additional period (usually about a week) during which registration for the open spaces will remain available only to Southern Flames members, on a first come, first placed basis, by delivery of checks to the Treasurer, either in person or by mail to the address above.

If class seats remain open after the additional members-only registration period, class registration will be opened to the general glass community via announcements in web forums, emails, etc.    Of course, Southern Flames members may still enroll for available spaces after registration has been opened to the public, but they will no longer be given preference and spaces will be filled on a first come-first served basis.

If you have any questions about this class or about the lottery, contact Margo Knight at or Martha Fuerst at
