February 18-19 and February 20-21, 2010

 

 We are very pleased to announce that Caitlin Hyde is coming to Atlanta to teach her wonderful Pictorial Bead class for Southern Flames!  Two classes will be offered:  Thursday-Friday, February 18-19, and Saturday-Sunday, February 20-21, 2010.  Both 2-day class sessions will cover the same material.  The cost of the class will be $350.00 (Members) and $375.00 (Non Mambers)

BIO: Caitlin Hyde lives in Corning, New York and has been making flameworked glass beads and small sculpture since 1996. She teaches workshops at the Corning Museum of Glass and across the country. Caitlin’s background in illustration, textile design and love of high contrast, rhythmic pattern are evident in her  pictorial beads and assembled figurative work.  CLASS CONTENT: Beginning with simple diagrams and using combinations of dot, stringer and masking techniques we will produce clean representational images on the bead surface.  (See examples of Caitlin’s beads above).  This is an exciting process for immediate to advanced students looking for a new approach to bead design. 

MATERIALS: Students will supply their own glass (standard colors of Morretti/Effetre) and basic tools to be used in the class.  A specific materials/supply list will be sent to students after the lottery.

EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Intermediate and beyond. Students should have completed some form of basic glass bead making instruction, either self–taught or otherwise.

 SELECTION: Placement of students in the classes will be by lottery, open only to Southern Flames members in good standing, as detailed below.

 

LOTTERY DETAILS 

  • The lottery for class placement will be held at the Southern Flames meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, 2009.  
  • Prior to the lottery, each interested member must complete a Lottery Form and provide a check for $350.00 made payable to Southern Flames.
  • You may complete the Lottery Form and bring it, along with your check, to the occasion of the lottery drawing (see date and location above -- additional lottery forms will be available at that time).
  • If you would like to be included in the lottery, but will not be able to attend the occasion of the lottery drawing, you may mail your completed Lottery Form along with a check payable to Southern Flames in the amount of $350.00, to the Southern Flames Treasurer, Martha Fuerst, at the address below:

Your check must be received by Martha no later than Friday, December 4.  Martha will email you a confirmation when she has received your check and form, and you will be entered into the lottery drawing.  If you do not receive a confirmation within a reasonable time, please contact Martha prior to the lottery to confirm whether or not your check and lottery form have been received.  Martha’s email address is martha1st@comcast.net

  • Eight spaces will be available in each class session.  Once all sixteen spaces are filled, names will continue to be drawn for waitlist positions.  Please note on your Lottery Form if you wish to be placed on waitlist status.  Checks for waitlist participants will not be deposited unless a class position opens for that person.  In the past, we have often had students withdraw due to various emergencies, and have actually been able to place the last person on the waitlist in the class, so there is a possibility that slots may become available to those on the waitlist.
  • Checks received from lottery participants who do not win class seats in the lottery will be destroyed unless the member indicates he or she would like to be on the waitlist.  In that event, checks will be held but not deposited unless a class position becomes available.
  • If at any time a waitlist participant would like to be removed from the waitlist, he or she may notify the Treasurer, and she will return that person's check and remove him/her from the waitlist.
  • Once you have been placed in a class, the class fee is non-refundable.  However, if you are ultimately unable to attend the class, you should notify the Treasurer and/or the Event Coordinator, and your space will be offered to those on any waitlist.  You will be refunded your money only if someone takes over and pays for your class space.  The process of filling vacated class spaces must go through the Treasurer/Event Coordinator and the waitlist process. You may not directly sell or give your space to another individual unless all waitlisted persons have declined to take over the space.
  • At the beginning of the class you will be asked to complete a liability waiver; only those who complete and sign the waiver may attend the class.  You will not be eligible for a refund of the class fee if you refuse to sign the waiver.  In addition, Southern Flames reserves the right to place class photos, which may include pictures of you and/or your class work, on its website.
  • The Lottery Form asks for your name, address, phone number, email address, preference of class session, and whether you wish to be placed on the waitlist if your name is not initially drawn for a space in the class.
  • If on the lottery form you state that you can attend either class, you may indicate your first preference and we will attempt to place you in the preferred class.  However, understand that your ability to be flexible in class choice may mean you will be placed in your second choice session in order to accommodate another Southern Flames member with less schedule flexibility.  For instance: You may indicate that you can attend either class session but prefer Saturday/Sunday. If at the time your name is drawn there is space in the Saturday/Sunday class, you will be put into that session per your preference.  However, if later in the lottery the name of someone who can attend only the Saturday/Sunday session is drawn and seats remain open only in the Thursday/Friday session, then since you indicated your ability to attend the Thursday/Friday class, you will be moved to that session to accommodate the person who can only attend the Saturday/Sunday class. 

If the class is not full after the lottery... 

If any class seats are open after completion of the lottery process, an email will be sent to Southern Flames members announcing an additional period (usually about a week) during which registration for the open spaces will remain available only to Southern Flames members, on a first come, first placed basis, by delivery of checks to the Treasurer, either in person or by mail to the address above.  

If class seats remain open after the additional members-only registration period, class registration will be opened to the general glass community via announcements in web forums, emails, etc.    Of course, Southern Flames members may still enroll for available spaces after registration has been opened to the public, but they will no longer be given preference and spaces will be filled on a first come-first served basis.
