Creative Experiments for Beadmakers

(with a little bit of sculpture and surface design instruction thrown in there too!)

September 15-16, 2012
(a second class may be added on Thurs-Fri 9/13-14 depending on the response at the initial lottery drawing on August 22)

Cost: $185 – 2-day class

Sylvie is known for her whimsical glass focal beads, including mermaids, fairies and other fun floral creations, and her signature style is easily recognizable.  Her beads have been sold at bead stores nationwide and collected internationally.  Her approach to the creative process is one of experimentation and embracing the mistakes.

In this class, students learn the techniques that are the core of Sylvie’s bead designs: Surface Decoration and Sculptural Techniques in the context of experimentation.  Students will see the creative process that she uses in developing new ideas.

The demonstrations and lecture MIGHT include:

·         Creating fancy encased cane for use in surface designs such as florals

·         The use of pixie dust and enamels to expand the color palette

·         Sculptural bead forms

·         Creating beads using the puffy mandrel

The class will also include lots of other fun, less predictable stuff due to the nature of experimentation and the creative process.

Students will go through their own guided experiments and class discussion as well as torch time to follow up on their ideas.

This 2-day workshop is appropriate for “advanced beginners” – those with torch experience on a minor bench burner or similar torch, comfortable with making a base bead shape, but ready for more.

Students will supply their own glass (standard colors of Morretti/Effetre) and basic tools to be used in the class.  A specific materials/supply list will be sent to students after the lottery.  In addition, Sylvie will supply a variety of frits, powders and pixie dust.

Eight class spaces will be available.  Placement of students in the class will be by lottery, open only to Southern Flames members in good standing, as detailed below.  If enough interest is shown by the initial lottery, a second class may be added on Thursday & Friday, September 13 & 14.

Lottery Details:

Camille Simmons

If the class is not full after the lottery...

If any class seats are open after completion of the lottery process, class registration will be opened to the general glass community via announcements in web forums, emails, etc.    Of course, Southern Flames members may still enroll for available spaces after registration has been opened to the public, but they will no longer be given preference and spaces will be filled on a first come-first served basis.
